County should help ORMC in loan debt

MILLEDGEVILLE — The county commission and its administrative officers have done yeoman’s work to keep county spending in line with decreased tax collections, and they are to be commended for it. However, they risk missing the boat if they fail to support Oconee Regional Medical Center in its equally yeoman attempt to keep its expenses in line with income.

If the county were to accede to ORMC’s request, it would reduce ORMC’s payments on its indebtedness by $500,000 per year. In my book, that half of a million dollars is not a small piece of change. This is a common method that other counties are using to help their hospitals, and Baldwin County has done so previously.

ORMC is a vital asset to our county. It is a vital asset to the health and welfare of our citizens. It is a vital asset to the health and welfare of those in surrounding counties. It is a vital asset in luring industry here. It is a vital asset to our county because it supplies 700 jobs.

Come on fellows — we are all in this together. You may save the county a few bucks but what good is the county without a decent hospital?
