What do you say to a veteran?

If you think this is difficult, let me try to answer. In all cases, a sincere “Thank you for your service” is sufficient. You need no military experience to say and mean this. The response will depend on further talks. If none, you will have done more than you know. The veteran will be more than grateful.

It is said, a veteran signed a blank check payable to the United States of America for service to include the ultimate sacrifice of giving their life.

Perhaps the more difficult question is “What do you say, when the veteran offers thanks back to you?” Don’t worry, you will say or do the right thing. Maybe a handshake, pat on the shoulder or a smile. They’ll know.

What you may not realize is — for a moment, you are that veteran’s parade.
