Thanks to Louie Herron for his financial support

MILLEDGEVILLE — A few months ago, I was asked to once again take on the exciting task of producing a large scale fireworks show for our community. After consulting with my wife and very astute and enthusiastic 7-year-old stepdaughter, I excitedly agreed to take on the challenge, enlisted the help of Milledgeville’s Young Professionals Organization (of which I am a board member) and set out on another planning adventure.

Saturday, June 30, at the Milledgeville Mall, after a full day of events and an evening of live music and community bonding, the sun will set and the night sky will light up with a display of American patriotism and civic pride — but this wouldn’t have happened had one man not stepped up and pledged his massive financial support for the event.

I met Louie Herron shortly after his arrival in Milledgeville three years ago. While it feels like he has been in our community for a decade, Louie has made quite an impression on the community and on me personally in a short period of time. All businesses get asked to buy advertising, sponsor events and donate charitably — and as a local businessman — I experience every day, the tough choices of giving versus staying profitable and how to manage the two.

In a perfect world, we could all give an endless stream of financial support to every group and organization. Unfortunately, we simply cannot. In my 16 years as a Baldwin County resident, I have never encountered a businessman who is so devoted of his resources to the community in which he serves and lives, as Louie Herron.

He has made an enormous impact on such organizations and events as Baldwin High School’s Marching Band, Deep Roots Festival, Milledgeville Idol, the return of our 4th of July Fireworks, and many, many more.

While sitting in his office one day for an afternoon chat — Louie looked at me and quoted Luke Chapter 12 and said simply “To whom much is given, much is required.”

Those words rang true for me and reminded me of my responsibilities as a husband, a father, a public servant and a man. In my opinion, he is an example of a leader, community steward and a morally convicted man. We all see and hear his ads and know he has a big-time car dealership, but behind the local “fame” is a man that has literally put everything he has into the Milledgeville area.

Yes, Louie Herron is financially supporting an endeavor that I am partially responsible for producing — but he didn’t do it for me. He did it for all of you. He always does. Next time you happen to see him, I hope you tell him thank you. He certainly deserves it.
