General Boylan, as usual, was right, and in this case just beat me to it. I was embarrassed when I rode in the parade and briefly spoke to Delta Company of our 48th Brigade last weekend.
These young men and women, some of whom did not return, were in harms way not just daily but hourly on their recent deployment to Afghanistan to protect YOUR / MINE / OUR FREEDOM and way of life. Only 100 to 200 people came out for the parade and the ceremony at GMC.
Yes, it was a gorgeous Saturday morning and yes I could have been somewhere else enjoying the day. A couple of hours is not too much to ask of everyone of you reading this who choose to enjoy a few hours of FREEDOM while not thanking those who are fighting to protect it.
What our troops are fighting for today is the exact same freedom that our fathers and grandfathers fought for in World War I and World War II. The only difference is when those troops came home; tens of thousands welcomed them, today 200. It's the same freedom folks so let's thank them accordingly.
I know their commanders and I know they will not let them remember how little so many cared to come and thank our troops. The next time they are deployed to PROTECT YOU and your way of life again and return home, I sincerely hope we will do better.
