A few days ago I received a letter from a fellow submarine veteran complaining about Mexicans migrating into our country illegally while their defenders claim profiling to catch them is unfair and should not be used.
He pointed out that it is a common practice for American citizens to be asked for legal identification almost daily in our way of life. He cited the following reasons we might be asked to show identification: after traffic violations, purchasing items with a credit card, showing up for a doctor’s appointment, applying for a credit card or loan application, applying or renewing a passport, applying or renewing a driver’s license, when donating blood, process of enrolling in school, filling a drug prescription, making debit and credit purchases, when receiving a boarding pass on airlines or trains.
I can think of a few other reasons that I am asked for identification: when voting, when cashing a check, when purchasing alcoholic beverages, when traveling from one country to another.
Since it is legal for identification to be requested when crossing our border from either direction, why are the legal eagles screaming against law enforcement demanding IDs of those suspected of crossing our borders illegally?
