MILLEDGEVILLE —
A recent OpEd in The Union-Recorder stated that a county commissioner equated the likelihood of homes that have pools with the children who play soccer in the Recreation League. Such an assertion, made without a scintilla of factual data and insinuating racial distinctions between children who play soccer and others who use the swimming pool, does nothing but exacerbate conditions in our community.
If we are to recover from the economic disaster in which we find ourselves, it is essential that we work together as one community with the understanding that we will recover by uniting in a common goal.
It is far past the time to believe that we can walk separately and still elevate our community.
Benjamin Franklin’s observation that “We must hang together or we shall hang separately” is as true today as is was 240 years ago — and is particularly true when applied to our community. We can recognize our differences, but we must unite in and celebrate our common humanity.
Maj. Gen. Peter Boylan (Ret.)
