Foster families play a vital role

MILLEDGEVILLE — May is National Foster Care Month, and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the Foster Parents of Baldwin County for the work they do caring for Georgia’s children and families. By opening their home and heart, they play a vital role in helping children and families in crisis heal.

Department of Family and Children Services’ foster families not only provide temporary homes, safety and nurturing to children, but they also help birth families by ensuring that children can be safely reunited with them. When reunification is not possible, many of our families choose to adopt the children who have been in their home, offering permanency and stability to these children who may not know what that is.

That commitment is an indelible mark on generations to come. They are helping to end cycles of neglect, abuse and/or drug addiction and often helping a child be the first in his or her family to finish high school or even go to college. Children leave foster homes knowing they are other paths in life than what they were accustomed to.

I know foster parents don’t get nearly enough thanks or recognition for their efforts, but I appreciate all they do and wanted them to know. And although the children they have helped don’t always tell them, their lives have been changed forever having known and been helped by them.

Thanks to the following foster parents of Baldwin County for sharing their family and their home, love, encouragement and hope to children and families in need: Hilda Barber, Cheryl Ferrell, Pamela Griffin, Preston and Lorene Glenn, Annette Macklin, Mike and Terri Weaver, Patricia Roberson, Qteeva Wilcher, Jimmy and Janie Hicks, John and Jennie Mundie, Dexter and Amy Galloway, Carlos and Alma Herrera, Shedrick and Lanzandra Knox, Sayre and Laura Mender, Donald and Francine Moats, Gita Phelps, Chad and Amy Powell, Terry and Pat Rackley, Regina Ridley, Richard and Tina Smith and Kim Landrum.
