Museum camps give youth educational experience

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia’s Old Capital Museum is offering area youth a unique educational experience in exploring historic sites, learning about Georgia’s history, and refining their art techniques during its annual summer camps.

This year’s camp will begin July 9 and conclude July 13 for youth ages eight to 14 with a registration deadline of Wednesday, June 27. The camp fee of $125 per student includes all admissions and materials along with a one-year family membership to the museum worth at a $40 value. Discounts are available for signing up for both camps and for multiple family members.

Students will transform into super detectives while exploring the streets of Milledgeville in search of clues to the city’s history in the “Town Sleuths” camp. Campers will investigate Memory Hill Cemetery, the Oconee River Greenway, the Brown-Stetson-Sanford House, Georgia College campus and downtown sites, and also take a ride on the local Trolley Tour. Camp begins each day at 9 a.m. and ‘Town Sleuths’ will end at noon.

Led by Carolyn Pruitt and Cathy Wood, students participating in the “Meet the Artists” camp will learn through art about the influence of history on the works of artists, including Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse and Seurat. The young artists will draw from the museum exhibits and artifact collections for inspiration and to study first-hand. “Meet the Artists” will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. each day during the week of the camp.

Georgia’s Old Capital Museum Society continues to serve the community with educational programs and events that promote its mission to identify, preserve, and communicate the historic and cultural heritage of Milledgeville.

For more information about the museum, located at 201 E. Greene St. on the Georgia Military College campus, the upcoming camps, or to register, call (478) 453-1803 or e-mail sally@oldcapitalmuseum.org.
