MILLEDGEVILLE —
With the recent move into the Maxwell Student Union from Ennis Hall, the GIVE Center, an acronym for Georgia College & State University Involved in Volunteer Efforts, initiated its efforts in 1997 with a small red basket, but is now a full-fledged volunteer service center with 18 staff members.
In just the last year alone, 2,500 Georgia College students gave back to various community organizations, agencies, schools and college campus programs through the donation of 70,000 volunteer hours.
The GIVE Center serves as the volunteerism clearinghouse empowering students to make a difference by linking them to the needs of the local community, states the Georgia College website. Through the center Georgia College students, faculty and staff become involved in campus wide, local community, national and international volunteer efforts in a range of areas, including fine arts, health, minority issues, animals, disasters, elderly, poverty and general service.
A ribbon cutting commemoration, themed “Work is Wait,” is slated from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 10, at the GIVE Center’s new location on the first floor of the Maxwell Student Union.
Open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and through 6 p.m. Friday, Georgia College students interested in donating their time to others are encouraged to register with the GIVE Center and choose amongst more than 250 local programs to get involved with.
For more information about the GIVE Center or to register as a volunteer, call (478) 445-5700 or e-mail give@gcsu.edu.
