MILLEDGEVILLE —
The Morris-Little Post 6 American Legion will hold its annual Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show, Blood Drive and Chicken Dinner Plate Sale Saturday.
The event, a fundraiser that will benefit the Legion’s building fund and the newly established Veteran’s Assistance Program, will be held at Legion headquarters at 231 Log Cabin Road.
Post Commander John Griffin said that if preliminary data is any indication, the event will be bigger than ever.
“From what I can gather,” Griffin said, “from talking to people and judging from e-mails, we could have more people than last year.”
Griffin started the fundraiser six years ago. He said the event catered to people who enjoy car shows but didn’t necessarily want to travel too far out of town to see the cars.
“That first year, we had 25 cars,” he said. “Last year, we had 62 entries.”
Griffin said the car show is open to anyone who would like to display their vehicle. Some members of the Old Capital Car Club are also members of the legion. Griffin is president of the club but said members of other car clubs have supported the show throughout the years, including members of the Georgia Classic Cruisers, the Middle Georgia Cruisers and the Old Timer’s Car Club of Macon.
The barbecue chicken plate sale is another component to the event that has a big following.
“We have sold more than 420 chicken dinner plates already,” Griffin said. “From 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. there will also be a limited number of plates available.”
In addition, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers will hold a blood collection drive at the event. LifeSouth provides blood to hospitals and medical facilities in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Griffin said the blood collected will return to the region through LifeSouth’s work.
Proceeds will benefit the Legion’s building fund but will also go to help veterans who need assistance. Griffin started the veterans assistance fund last year with a challenge to Legionnaires to match his initial donation. From there, the fund has grown and is now used to assist veterans when donated goods are not available.
“In case we have a veteran that is in need of something in particular, we have this fund so we can help them,” Griffin said.
Griffin said veteran recipients are very thankful for the help including one veteran in particular who was discharged from the Georgia War Veterans Home last year. The group was able to help him with his relocation by purchasing and collecting donated household goods.
The barbecue chicken dinner will include a half chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, bread, dessert and a drink. Tickets are available for $8. For more information or to purchase tickets for chicken plates, call Griffin at (478) 453-0295 or (478) 457-7717.
Registration for the car show will run from 9 a.m. until noon. Judging will take place from noon until 2 or 2:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and the chicken dinner plate sale will be held from 11 a.m. until noon.
