Mentors recognized at Blandy Hills

MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin High School “Big” students stopped by Blandy Hills Elementary School to spend time with their “Littles” Friday to create thank you cards for donors of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia program in observance of National Mentoring Month. Twenty-five “Littles” used markers, crayons and color pencils to decorate the cards and write about their experience with their “Bigs.” The High School Bigs program gives high school students the opportunity to mentor elementary school students. ‘We serve close to 200 kids in the Oconee area and that includes Baldwin and Putnam counties,’ Director of Partnerships Patricia Humphrey said. ‘Matches cost about $1,000 per year. We’re always looking for volunteers because even one hour per week can make a difference in a child’s life.’ Mentors in 15 central Georgia counties helped almost 1,200 children grow and develop positive attitudes and habits in 2011.
