Area farmer reflects on unlikely livelihood

MILLEDGEVILLE — Sid Cox never thought he would be making his livelihood in the farming industry. The Sparta-based farmer has been the owner and operator of Deerwood Farm since 2005.

Cox, 65, hails from a small town in Alabama about 30 miles from Florida where his family owned and operated a small neighborhood grocery store.

After two years of technical training in electronics, he worked in the information technology field for 40 plus years before finally settling in Hancock County in 2003. Cox began devoting more hours of the day toward growing organic vegetables in 2007.

Today, Cox runs and maintains Deerwood Farm which consists of 125 acres of woodlands and open fields where 16 goats also reside.

He was one of the founders of a local Farmers Cooperative and served as president for several years until the membership disbanded last year. He now independently markets his vast assortment of seasonal produce to the Milledgeville Marketplace Downtown Farmers Market each Tuesday, The Ritz-Carlton Lodge on Lake Oconee and the Sprouts Market. Items available include cabbage, carrots, chard, collards, kale, beets, lettuce, onions, peas, radishes, spinach, squash, tomatoes, turnips, herbs and more.

Deerwood Farm is part of the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription program, which offers customers a convenient way to purchase their weekly supply of produce in advance and have their items picked up on delivery days each week at the local markets.

Farming and health enthusiasts can visit the farm at 951 Tucker Rd. in Sparta by appointment only.

For more information about Deerwood Farm or to subscribe to the CSA program, call (706) 444-9555, e-mail sidcox@hughes.net, or visit www.deerwoodfarm.weebly.com.
