Cruisers cap almost two years of fundraising

Club makes good on promise to help local man waiting for transplant

Last year The Union-Recorder shared the story of a local motorcycle club that decided to help out a Milledgeville man in need of a kidney transplant.

Last week the Milledgeville Cruisers Motorcycle Club called back to say members had raised more than $2,200 to help Broderick Walker cover the costs associated with his kidney transplant and had presented him with a check for the money in a small celebration about two weeks ago.

“Each year, we raise money to benefit a different person or organization,” Milledgeville Cruisers President Leroy Butts told The Union-Recorder. “When there is a need out there we try to help out with a little something.”

Walker said the Cruisers will continue to work with him to ensure that he is able to meet all his obligations when a kidney becomes available for transplant.

“I’m just a 25-year-old guy who needs a kidney transplant,” Walker said. “The Milledgeville Cruisers have been very helpful to me; they’ve hosted two motorcycle rides and raised money through cookouts and several car washes to help me out and give me some money for when I do have the transplant.”

Walker said he has been on the waiting list to receive a kidney transplant for two years now; for almost as long as that, the Milledgeville Cruisers have been working with him to raise money to help him through this experience.

“I feel pretty good knowing that there are still people out there who try to help people,” Walker said. “They’ve been very helpful to me. I couldn’t have done it alone; with their help, I’ve gotten a lot accomplished.”

Also, since the last time The Union-Recorder wrote about Broderick Walker, he has married his fiancée Nakia.
