Senior sets out on annual kayaking journey

MILLEDGEVILLE — Most 64-year-olds generally have decreased energy and vigor compared to their younger counterparts, but Bruce Henderson is going strong as he prepares to journey on his fourth annual 18.5-mile kayaking expedition Saturday.

Henderson and wife Gail hailed from Atlanta to Milledgeville nearly six years ago where they soon found a passion for kayaking and the great outdoors on Lake Sinclair.

Using his 65-pound golden papaya-colored Hobie Mirage Revolution kayak, Bruce will paddle and peddle his way from Sinclair Marina to the home of long time friends Rick and Kathy Henderson off of South Steel Bridge Road in Putnam County.

In order to beat the sweltering July heat, he plans to leave for his four-hour round-trip at 6 a.m. when temperatures are expected to be in the mid-70s and will continue to rise hourly.

Bruce plans to continue going on daily trips between three and six miles long, but hopes to one day go even further distance-wise.
