Milledgeville Community Garden Association plans autumn potluck

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville Community Garden Association (MCGA) is hosting an Autumn Potluck Sunday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Southside Garden.

This event will consist of local farmers, Master Gardeners and volunteers planting and preparing the land for the upcoming growing season, as well as a potluck meal and opportunity to learn more about the organization.

“People should bring a dish to share and plenty of water to keep hydrated. Wear gardening clothing, and bring a spare pair of gloves to share,” said Tiffany Matthews, Southside Garden manager.

The event also an excellent opportunity for the community to become familiar with the Southside Garden, and explore options for volunteering and possibly purchasing a plot of their own.

“We have a thriving butterfly garden, as well as a fruit orchard, children's garden and herb patch,” Mathews added.

Mathews said this is the second potluck event the association has organized. A “summer potluck” was held earlier this year. This is, however, their first autumn event.

The Association has plans to give back to the community with the products of their labor: “We're hoping to plant the whole Southside Garden with wholesome vegetables with plans of donating most of the produce,” Mathews said.

The produce will be donated to the local soup kitchen, Café Central, as well as similar charities in the area. The MCGA will also educate students and local community members on how to plant, grow and nurture a sustainable vegetable garden.

“The local soup kitchen serves 300 to 400 people a day, and we want to help provide healthy vegetables to all of the people in Milledgeville, in any way possible,” Mathews said.
