MILLEDGEVILLE —
Local electors interested in the future of Milledgeville and Baldwin County will have an opportunity to hear first-hand tonight from the leaders vying for the chance to address the district’s issues and concerns.
Georgia College & State University, the American Democracy Project and Digital Bridges will host a debate-style forum for candidates for the 12th U.S. Congressional District this evening at 7 p.m. at the Knight Community Innovation Center in downtown Milledgeville.
The forum will feature all four republican candidates running for office and democratic candidate Regina Thomas. Incumbent John Barrow will not take part in tonight’s debate.
With 12 days remaining before the July 20 primary, tonight’s event is a key opportunity to hear from the candidates themselves on issues of local and national importance such as the economy, federal spending and the deficit, jobs creation, the environment and education.
Those who can’t make it out to the event in person can tune in via the Internet, as the debate will be streamed live. In the coming days, the debate will also be available on iTunes for viewing.
Hearing from these candidates live and gauging their responses to many of the questions and issues of local concern and those impacting the 12th District in this fashion is a unique opportunity to hear where the candidates stand on issues and further become an informed and knowledgeable voting public.
U.S. Pres. John F. Kennedy was once credited with saying, “The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all,” stressing the importance of well-informed voters and their impact.
Tonight’s forum is one chance to get informed and stay abreast of the issues being waged in this election cycle and how they have the potential to impact close to home. If we all work to become more involved and informed participants in the process, in the very least we stand only to enhance the process rather than serve as detractors to it.
