Deep Roots bike ride shows off our community

MILLEDGEVILLE — Next Saturday, Milledgeville will kick off a day of music and community entertainment with its inaugural Deep Roots Festival Ride. Putting together an event of this kind, just hours before the annual music festival welcomes thousands of visitors to downtown Milledgeville, was perhaps only a dream just a few years ago. But as Milledgeville continues to work to promote itself as a Bicycling Friendly community, next weekend’s event is a testament to just how far the community has grown in working toward that goal.

In conjunction with the ninth annual Deep Roots Festival, the fall ride is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the Georgia College parking lot on Irwin Street.

This first-ever bike event is another way to promote the vision of having a bicycle friendly community, and proceeds go to support local causes that demonstrate some of bicycling’s ancillary benefits with regard to tourism and a meaningful impact on promoting the positives of exercise as a way of life.

Proceeds from the event will be divided amongst Georgia Cancer Support, Cafe Central, Milledgeville Community Garden Association and Live Healthy Baldwin/Bicycle Friendly Community.

Next weekend’s ride projects Milledgeville as accommodating and rider-friendly while promoting bicycling as a healthy and safe activity in this community.

The event is also for all ages and family-friendly and provides another opportunity to expose bicycling and promote Milledgeville to people who may not readily be familiar with either. Educating the community on the benefits of bicycling with younger residents, within the local schools, means that students will know the positives at a younger age and will become more likely to stick with the activity as adults.

The Deep Roots Ride is hoped to become an annual fall event and will be a great compliment to the spring bicycle event, the annual April Fools Ride.

Next weekend’s ride is an opportunity for the community to see first hand what a fun, healthy, community-friendly event bicycling programs can provide.
