MILLEDGEVILLE — The community issued its well-wishes and goodbyes Thursday afternoon to outgoing county administrator Joan Minton, who announced her retirement earlier this year after a longstanding career working in county government.

Minton began her career in local government in 1970 in the accounting department, and four years later she was promoted to county clerk and treasurer. She worked her way up through the ranks and was named county administrator in 1985, and in 1993 she became county manager.

Minton’s career in grassroots government spans 40 years, and her service and dedication to Baldwin County is certainly commendable. The job comes with numerous responsibilities that carry with it significant implications — from county government finances, jobs and personnel, to helping to manage the overall day to day function of local government.

During the course of her busy career, she has also maintained a strong and active relationship with the community through service, serving on boards and committees including being a member of the Georgia Finance Officers Association, the Convention & Visitors Bureau Board, the Central State Hospital Foundation Board among others. She has also previously served as president of the Georgia County Managers Association. Working at varying levels in government work has perhaps provided a sound opportunity for Minton to learn and understand the ins and outs and provide a greater level of wisdom and insight into the job.

Minton’s service and dedication to her work is perhaps rooted in her vested interests of family and community and throughout the course of her career, that level of service has shined through in the work that she put forth and will likely continue on into her retirement as she stays connected through work and activities that in the end will continue to serve this community well.
