Resident catches alleged burglar napping in car outside home

WEATHERFORD, Texas — Two suspected burglars were arrested Sunday morning when a resident held one of them at gunpoint after reportedly finding him asleep in a vehicle near the resident's house.

The men are accused of stealing more than $23,000 in property during an early morning crime spree, the Weatherford Democrat reported.

According to the Parker County Sheriff’s Office, Jordan Alan Dorris, 18, of Springtown, was found “asleep” in a silver Nissan Extera SUV parked on the complainant’s residence in the 7600 block of Prather Road shortly after 9 a.m.

The complainant removed Dorris from the vehicle and held him at gunpoint until deputies arrived, the sheriff’s office reported.

The complainant also reported a 2001 Chevrolet dually pickup missing from the property and five additional vehicles burglarized.

The vehicles had been rummaged through and a large amount of property, including a rifle, were missing from the vehicle, the man told deputies.

Dorris reportedly told deputies that he and a suspect identified as 17-year-old Caleb Andrew Kirkbride took the Nissan SUV for a “joy ride.”

The SUV belonged to a juvenile female, who reportedly told deputies that a bracelet and her keys were missing and that the men did not have permission to take the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Dorris also reportedly told deputies that Kirkbride stole the pickup and property while Dorris slept in the Nissan, the sheriff’s office reported.

Dorris was then allowed to contact Kirkbride, who reportedly said he would return to the complainant’s address.

The complainant’s neighbor then arrived on scene and reported that he observed the pickup, driven by an unknown suspect, traveling down J.E. Woody Road, running motorists off the roadway and striking several street signs, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies stopped the truck and detained Kirkbride.

Stolen property was valued at a total of more than $23,000 and included the pickup and SUV, a Herrington & Richardson 30/30 rifle, a tool box, a pair of boots, a vehicle CD player, a checkbook and $8,000 check, CDs, a pole saw, a chain saw, a propane heater, a brake controller, two credit cards, a flashlight, two pocketknives, various hand tools, two junk lawnmowers and scrap copper. Most of the items were recovered during the initial investigation, the sheriff’s office reported.

Kirkbride was charged with three felony thefts, burglary of a building, burglary of a building, criminal mischief and a misdemeanor theft, according to jail records, which indicated Dorris received the same charges, plus an additional felony theft charge.

Dorris was released Tuesday evening from the Parker County Jail on a total bond of $65,500, while Kirkbride remained in jail, jail records show.

The Democrat was unable to reach Dorris for comment as the number listed for Dorris’ address was not in service.
