Rocket Roller Rink under new ownership after 42 years

MILLEDGEVILLE — New Rocket Roller Rink owners Brian and Stephanie Mixon recently joined with Michael and Chandra Brewer to purchase the 18,000-square-foot facility. The process began four months back. Brian Mixon and his sister Chandra Brewer shared many old birthday parties, and Mixon even met his wife Stephanie at the rink.A full renovation and renewed focus on a safe, family atmosphere is in the works while the Rocket Roller Rink name stays. Mixon says the name recognition is key, but several changes, like an advanced security system and visible parental staff, make a positive difference.

Everyone who enters gets a wristband, which helps control crowd flow. No one can re-enter unless they purchase a new admission. Treating everyone equally with the band system has worked nicely so far, and Mixon said few if any problems have occurred.

A new sound system and tweaked DJ software allow for creative mixes and blends of songs from all generations. While new arcade games and a mini rink for beginners are coming, Mixon said the main goal is having the best skating rink in Middle Georgia.

The owners donated $15,000 worth of free passes to local schools as a reward for good students and to generate a healthy facility buzz. Rocket Roller Rink is open Wednesday through Saturday for normal summer hours ranging from noon to 11 p.m. slots. Sundays through Tuesdays are reserved for special programming like Faith Night and other private events.

Brewer saw a lack of good places for kids to be active and believes the rink will fill in using strong social support.

“That target age group falls in that gap of not having anywhere to go. We want another outlet for them,” Brewer said. “That was the motivator. It's a mission outlet too. If you love them and show the kids guidance, they will gravitate toward you.”
