Asian Bistro offers variety of Asian cuisine

Asian Bistro and Grill, 124 W. Hancock St., may be new to the downtown area, but locals and college students alike have been venturing into the new business since it opened in October to sample a variety of Asian cuisine.

Owner John Tran, who worked in several Asian restaurants in many different capacities in New York City, said he moved to Milledgeville to escape the big city life.

His sister and her husband, he said, lived here and it just seemed like a nice place to reside.

“My family is here,” he said. “My brother-in-law and my sister live here so I decided to move out of the big city and this just seemed like the place to be.”

Tran said his lengthy history working at Asian restaurants in New York City served him well, and he decided to open up his own place in Milledgeville as a way to showcase the most celebrated dishes of Asian cuisine.

“I’ve been to work in many different Asian restaurants as a cook, a server, a bartender,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot, and I created my own special sauce. Most of the food is my creation.”

The restaurant, which serves up the most well-known dishes in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine, has been doing well thus far, and he is grateful for the steady flow of customers he has seen since opening, he said.

“For a new restaurant, I’m very grateful for the business,” he said. “I like all types of Asian food, so we’re trying to fit a lot of Asian food on the menu to suit more people. I focus on the main dishes of each country so people can have a taste of each type of cuisine.”

The restaurant’s specialty dishes include Korean short ribs, Thai curried beef, Chinese General Tso chicken, Japanese Teriyaki shrimp, chicken, beef and salmon and Vietnamese noodles.

Tran said he has plans to incorporate some French-style cuisine into the menu eventually, but for now, he serves up specialty dishes such as Crème Brulee and Citrus Garlic Mahi Mahi on special occasions.

The restaurant, which is located just beside Buffington’s where Bad Habit was located previously, is affordable for both local residents and college students, as it offers a $7.95 lunch special Bento Box and a $12.95 dinner special.

The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch and 5 until 10 p.m. for dinner Monday through Friday. The restaurant remains open for dinner until 8 p.m. Sundays and until 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Additionally, the restaurant has a full service bar that is open until 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
