Grits serves up large portions — Southern-style

Milledgeville residents on small budgets can still get large portions of good old Southern cooking — cafeteria style.

A while back, Rocky Duncan and Trey Britt, owners of Grits restaurant, had their eyes on a potential opportunity in the form of a foreclosed property — the location where Cafe South was formerly known to thrive.

They believed Grits would succeed due to Cafe South’s great reputation and loyal customers.

“When people began coming in, they said they loved the food. We like the fact that we are conveniently located for Central State and prison employees. It’s great to hear from people who grew up around here,” Duncan said.

The restaurant serves daily specials throughout the week by changing one meat on the menu — from meat loaf Mondays and pork chop Tuesdays to roast beef Wednesdays and beef tips on Thursdays. Regardless of the day of the week, Grits’ fried and baked chicken is available every day along with their nearly famous grits and sweet tea. Turkey and dressing is offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. To go along with the meats, there is a huge selection of side items to choose from, including macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, candied yams, turnips, green beans, corn, rice, gravy, cabbage, fried okra, lima beans, rutabagas, squash casserole, grits, rolls and a variety of assorted desserts and cakes.

Prices for buffet meals range from $5.89 for the veggie meal to $9.99 for the deluxe meal, which includes a choice of three meats, two sides, soup or salad, bread and dessert.

Grits offers dine-in, carry-out and catering services for parties. So far, the restaurant has hosted many luncheons for fraternity and sorority socials, wedding rehearsal dinners and birthday parties.

Duncan and Britt both have a few plans up their sleeves to grow their business beyond just the Milledgeville area. Both owners hope to eventually expand their catering business in order to host more parties and serve surrounding counties. They said the sale or distribution of already more than 3,000 Grits t-shirts has become the biggest way to promote the establishment. They are hoping to sell or give out more than 5,000 t-shirts by the end of next year.

Grits is open for lunch 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. To make reservations or to order take-out, call Grits, located at 132 Hardwick St., at (478) 453-2520.
