MILLEDGEVILLE —
Though Acoustic Crossroads Music Store has had much success since the business opened two years ago, owner Jimmy Hall hopes to expand not only the store’s offerings, but services as well.
Hall said when he purchased the store in June 2008, it was the only music shop of its kind around in the Milledgeville area.
“This is the only place to get something brand new with warranty and if we don’t have it, we can get it through our suppliers,” he said.
Hall’s passion for music grew when he began playing the piano in his hometown church in Waycross.
“I played in our church, which had the whole drum bass ... and my son, Justin, was my guitar player,” he said. “I just love music. I have guitars laying all over the house.”
With individual piano, guitar, drums and bass lessons taught in the store once a week to those 5 years of age and older, Hall’s main goal is to strive to become the Acoustic Crossroads School of Music.
“One of the problems is that folks don’t know about the lessons I give. Anytime I mention it to anybody, they jump on it and sign their kids up,” he said. “I have anywhere from 40 to 60 students that are active right now. I really want to push the lessons because my goal is to have 100 students. I want to stay in the back and teach while someone else stays up front.”
Regular customer Jerome Williams of Hancock County has been shopping at the music store for a few years, often stopping by to purchase amps or to say hello.
“When the first of the month rolls by and he doesn’t walk in the door, you know something must be wrong,” Hall said jokingly.
“I heard about this place through some friends of mine and I came by and they just filled me full of joy,” Williams said. “I like the people here. You don’t have to worry about your supplies and no matter how much I bother [Hall], he doesn’t run me out. I recommend this store to the whole world.”
Acoustic Crossroads sells, buys and trades musical equipment, including mic and amp cables, drumsticks, stomp pedals and guitar picks. Hall is an authorized Peavey and Fender accessory dealer who sells various brands of guitars.
“I have brands like Takamine, Walden, Peavey and Indiana. Our Indianas sell the most, but Takamine has the most quality. The Indiana is a real nice guitar for moms who want to buy one for their 13-year-old sons,” he said. “I compare the Walden to Taylor’s or Martin’s, which start at $1,500. You can get a basic Walden for $300 and the feel is completely different; it sells on its own.”
With an average of 200 guitars to choose from, Hall recently ordered 60 more to add to his stock in preparations for the holiday seasons.
“We have a huge variety of different kinds of instruments at good prices and we can pretty much work with anybody to try to get a guitar in their hands,” son Justin Hall said. “Around the Christmas holidays, we put together packages where a guitar might come with picks and a small amp.”
The business is also able to provide repair services to guitars, speakers, amps, audio equipment and any type of band instruments.
“If the economy picks up, I would love to move to another town like Madison or Sandersville,” Hall said. “But right now, I’m here until the economy picks back up.”
Acoustic Crossroads is located at 3011 Heritage Place, across Gil’s Package Store, and is open at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday during the summer.
