Grits presents south side history and country grub

MILLEDGEVILLE — With a deep history dating back to the 1930s, Grits’ Hardwick Street location offers home-cooked, southern food for an affordable price.

After 3 1/2 years of operation, Grits is the lunch choice for a wide range of senior citizens, local servicemen, Central State Hospital employees and college crowds. Trey Britt purchased the foreclosed property and opened the restaurant in January 2009.

Formerly Café South, the space is nostalgic to people who grew up on the south side Milledgeville area.

Long-time employees note that the unique past of the Grits space brings a solid group. Grits opens from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on busy Sundays. Around noon, the church crowd wraps around Grits 50 or 60 deep.

The restaurant’s name keeps a southern feel and branding, in addition to offering multiple varieties of grits. Lunch options often include cheese, jalapeno, bacon, southwest, roasted red pepper and mixed breakfast grits.

The restaurant has two private dining rooms. Promotional Grits T-shirts are available for $4. Newsome said they don’t make money off the shirts, but the local promotion they provide is more than worth it. Those wearing the shirts while dining receive 5 percent discounts on that visit.

Call (478) 453-2520 for weekly menus and specials.
