MILLEDGEVILLE — Local native John Leslie worked two jobs at the age of 17 until he saved up enough money to purchase the original Shrimp Boat restaurant franchise in Milledgeville on Oct. 27, 1969, nearly a decade later. Though the namesake of the eatery gives off the sense of being a seafood restaurant, Leslie said the number one, best-selling item on the menu is the famous fried chicken. Shrimp Boat was named The Best Fried Chicken of Milledgeville and Baldwin County in The Union-Recorder Readers Choice Awards for the past three years.
From boxes, buckets and barrels of chicken to seafood dinners including fish, oysters, shrimp, deviled crab and catfish, Shrimp Boat also serves up its well-known steak sandwiches with okra, green beans, French fries, onion rings, potato salad and coleslaw fresh and cooked-to-order. Customers can dine-in, enjoy the convenience of visiting the drive-thru window or call ahead for take-out orders.
As the only Shrimp Boat restaurant open in the state, Leslie said nearly 6,000 new and regular customers stop by each week.
